STORING GAS IN UNDERGROUND ROCK CHAMBERS
Increasing attention is being paid to safety and environmental issues throughout the world when discussing decisions concerning construction and location of plants for the handling of energy. As we are being forced to an increasing extent to resort to vast reserves of energy to be found in this planet's natural gas deposits, it is both right and logical for reasons of safety and environmental protection to locate as much storage of LNG as possible below ground. But there are many other reasons for doing so, not least the economic, as the construction, operational and maintenance costs for underground storage are no greater and in many instances lower, than those for above-grade storage facilities. The Cryo Cavern Method is one of the few fully developed systems for underground storage to date – if not the only one – which has been so thoroughly tested and monitored as to represent a practical, safe and economical solution to the storage problem.
